Together
Come right away, come right away and stand here beside me
The morning is fresh and new and it’s waiting for me and you to walk together
Come hold my hand, come hold my hand. I want you here with me
There’s no need to be afraid. You and I were made to walk together
Together, we can walk the farthest hills
Together, far away from winter’s chills
Together, while time and space stand still
Together
Come see the dawn, come see the dawn. Watch the horizon
The mists of night will fade. All the colors of the world arrayed, for us, together
Together, we can walk the farthest hills
Together, far away from winter’s chills
Together, while time and space stand still
Together
Come walk with me, come walk with me can you feel the sunshine?
We’ll sing and talk in rhymes. Lose all track of time, together
Together, we can walk the farthest hills
Together, far away from winter’s chills
Together, while time and space stand still
Together
Come right away, come right away and stand here beside me
The morning is fresh and new and it’s waiting for me and you
To walk together
Crumbling Down
Is there a place on this earth where a body can stand
Is there a rock someplace not dissolving into sand
The clouds above us are melting into rain
Water from the heavens running down the drain
Crumbling down. It’s all crumbling down
Crumbling down. It’s all crumbling down
There’s not one solid place to put your feet on the ground
It’s all crumbling down
Time is rushing forward. You can’t turn back
The world is in pieces and we’re falling through the cracks
The only wind that blows is the wind of change
What’s good doesn’t stay and what comes is strange
Crumbling down. It’s all crumbling down
Crumbling down. It’s all crumbling down
There’s not one solid place to put your feet on the ground
It’s all crumbling down
Everything we’ve built is falling apart
All that’s light and true is slipping into dark
The mountains are just waiting to fill in the sea
Everything is moving toward cold infinity
Crumbling down. It’s all crumbling down
Crumbling down. It’s all crumbling down
There’s not one solid place to put your feet on the ground
It’s all crumbling down
A Candle For You
For my mother.
My eyes look at the sky as I climb these steps of stone
In this quiet hilltop town where I wander – alone
The treads are worn by time as if to show my feet the way
So many souls have passed by here but I climb alone today
The cathedral walls of glass transform the sun to scattered colors on the floor
And the sense of loss returns and shakes me to the core
I think this pain and longing is gonna break me in two
As I take a breath and wonder how to live with what my heart knows must be true
That you’re gone and you’re never coming back and there’s nothing I can do
Except stand here in this empty cathedral
And light a candle for you
I walk these cobbled streets lined with houses shuttered tight
And look for peace some kind of shelter from the night
I hear your voice constructed from my memory
But you’re a ghost you’ll leave this world along with me
The cathedral walls of glass transform the sun to scattered colors on the floor
And the sense of loss returns and shakes me to the core
I think this pain and longing is gonna break me in two
As I take a breath and wonder how to live with what my heart knows must be true
That you’re gone and you’re never coming back and there’s nothing I can do
Except stand here in this empty cathedral
Stand here in this empty cathedral
And light a candle for you
After the Rain
After the Rain when the air is so clear
We can walk through the ruins of what we once held so dear
After the Rain in the ashes and mud
What we loved lies in pieces washed away in the flood
After the rain the world has changed
After the rain we’ll never be the same
After the rain I call your name
After the rain
After the Rain we can walk in the sun
In the midst of all this wreckage something new has begun
After the Rain in the splintered new light
There’s new space in the world for new dreams to take flight
After the rain the world has changed
After the rain we’ll never be the same
After the rain I call your name
After the rain
The things we wanted
What we think we possess
Life moves onward and we struggle with less
After the rain ancient stars glimmer bright
Can we use them as candles to find our way in the night?
After the rain comes a brilliant blue sky
Water is life. It’s OK to cry
After the rain the world has changed
After the rain we’ll never be the same
After the rain I call your name
After the rain
The Tall Grass of Summer
Long ago in the tall grass of summer
I loved a lady so fair
She captured my heart like no other
Brown eyes – brown skin – brown hair
We made love in the tall grass of summer
We lay under skies so blue
Our eyes were locked on one another
We were richer than we ever knew
Hazy days and soft afternoons
Evenings wrapped in love’s cocoon
Salty kisses in the soft warm rain
Oh to live in summer once again
Now the rain pounds at my door
I can’t feel the sun any more
I pull my chair closer to the flames
To feel summer once again
Now I dream of the tall grass of summer
And the woman I love so true
Winter melts to spring when I think of her
And summer – oh summer – begins anew
Coming to Going
This song is dedicated to my daughter Kait.
Coming to Going – Need a little space and time
Coming to Going – Try to find out what’s really mine
I can’t tell you where the winds will blow or where the tides will flow
I don’t know
I’m coming to Going – Look for something real
Coming to Going – Remember how to feel
Too many years of compromise. I want to see through my own eyes
The path to where my future lies
I’m coming to Going – Swim out into water deep
Coming to Going – Wake up from this troubled sleep
Dip my feet in far-off streams
Put the color back in my dreams
I’m coming to Going – Gonna slip this skin I’ve outgrown
Coming to Going – My mistakes are gonna be my own
To stay would be too high a price. I can’t live by your advice
It’s too great a sacrifice
Coming to Going – Don’t shed your tears for me
Coming to Going – This is how it’s got to be
On Grand Mesa
For my father.
My father built the house on the main road out of town
Twenty miles from the Montrose general store
He walked the fields behind his team. He worked his whole life long
He gave all he had but the land wanted more
I grew up on that farm. I plowed behind that team
I bucked the hay and I drove the tractors too
My mom was always tired. The working killed her first
No matter what you did there was always more to do
On Grand Mesa the canyon walls are steep
And the snow piles deep on earth and stone
On Grand Mesa the wind blows through the trees
And it sings a song that I know in my bones
At seventeen years old I caught the Greyhound headed west
To a life I dreamed of in the promised land
A city in the sun where money means success
I held gold instead of leather in my hand
But the things you buy with gold don’t stay shiny when you’re old
I found myself forgotten and alone
So my mind is turning back to the trees and fields and shack
And the only place my heart calls home
On Grand Mesa the canyon walls are steep
And the snow piles deep on earth and stone
On Grand Mesa the wind blows through the trees
And it sings a song that I know in my bones
I’m an old hawk circling in a storm
Searching for home with tired eyes
I’m looking for a place that I can land
A place to rest, a place to die
On Grand Mesa the canyon walls are steep
And the snow piles deep on earth and stone
On Grand Mesa the wind blows through the trees
And it sings a song that I know in my bones
On Grand Mesa the canyon walls are steep
And the snow piles deep on earth and stone
On Grand Mesa the wind blows through the trees
And it sings a song that I know in my bones
