Album Lyrics :: Threescore

Stumbling into You

Isn’t it a wonder, the crazy things that happen in this world
Isn’t it a miracle what fate can do
I don’t believe in accidents but this is nothing I deserved
I was staring at my shoes and I stumbled into you

Was it something in the air or something else that we didn’t see
Was it something like a promise made for just us two
I can’t explain a thing. It really makes no sense to me
I got a gift from nowhere when I stumbled into you

Stumbling into you was the best thing that ever happened to me
Stumbling into you gave me a place to begin
Stumbling into you opened my eyes and made me see
Stumbling into you probably saved my skin

It’s like living in a dream that came from somewhere someplace else
It’s a kind of paradise that we’ve tumbled into
There’s no way to comprehend the luck behind the cards we’re dealt
I got the queen of hearts, face up, when I stumbled into you

Stumbling into you was the best thing that ever happened to me
Stumbling into you gave me a place to begin
Stumbling into you opened my eyes and made me see
Stumbling into you probably saved my skin

Where do we go from here? I really can’t begin to say
What does the future hold? I really wish I knew
I only know I want to be here beside you every day
I found what happens next when I stumbled into you

Stumbling into you was the best thing that ever happened to me
Stumbling into you gave me a place to begin
Stumbling into you opened my eyes and made me see
Stumbling into you, oh what a tumble it’s been
Stumbling into you probably saved my skin

Threescore

Threescore
I’m counting down from ten
Threescore
I’m counting down from ten
The way is dark and slippery
Night is coming soon
The road signs speak in foreign tongues
I’m praying for the moon

Threescore
I think a lot about the past
Threescore
I think a lot about the past
The people that I lied to
The people that are gone
The 5 times that I got it right
The million times that I was wrong

Threescore
I guess I did what I could do
Threescore
I guess I did what I could do
I failed and I succeeded
I tried to play the game
I won a few and lost a bunch
In the end it’s all the same

Threescore
I remember my old man
Threescore
I remember my old man
The things he could have told me
The secrets in his eyes
The sour taste of broken dreams
The stench of compromise

Threescore
I’m counting down from ten
Threescore
I remember my old man

Merry Go Round

No matter how high you fly
No matter how high you fly
You’re gonna come down
Everybody comes down
And when you come down
Be careful where you hit the ground

No matter how much you lie
No matter how much you lie
Some things are true
Some things are just true
You can’t change what’s true
There’s gonna be a day when the bill comes due

Pay a penny, pick a pony, on the merry go round
You’re not getting any closer to wherever you were bound
They’ve got you thinking that you’re lost but maybe you’re really found
Pay a penny, pick a pony, on the merry go round

No matter how much you buy
No matter how much you buy
It won’t be enough
Not nearly enough
It’s never enough
You’re just gonna die with too much stuff

No matter how hard you try
No matter how hard you try
You’re not gonna win
You’ll never win
Nobody wins
And you’re not gonna get to play again

Pay a penny, pick a pony, on the merry go round
You’re not getting any closer to wherever you were bound
They’ve got you thinking that you’re lost but maybe you’re really found
Pay a penny, pick a pony, on the merry go round

You can take this as a postcard from your future self
All these distractions are designed to turn you into something else

No matter how much you cry
No matter how much you cry
You’re gonna learn to laugh
Love and laugh
You were born to laugh
And you still got a chance in the second half

Pay a penny, pick a pony, on the merry go round
You’re not getting any closer to wherever you were bound
They’ve got you thinking that you’re lost but maybe you’re really found
Pay a penny, pick a pony, on the merry go round
Pay a penny, pick a pony, on the merry go round

Never

No No No Never
I’m never not gonna love you
No No No Never
I’m never not gonna love you
Every time I see your sweet smile
This old love feels brand new

All these years I’ve been right here
Walking by your side
All these years I’ve been right here
Walking by your side
I’m gonna be right here tomorrow
Wipe your eyes and don’t you cry

I might be getting old and slow
But my heart beats just as fast
I might be getting old and slow
But my heart beats just as fast
This old heart will belong to you
Just as long as it can last

Every year this love gets better
This one’s the best year yet
Every year this love gets better
This one’s the best year yet
Let’s try to live to be two hundred
I want to see how good it gets

No No No Never
I’m never not gonna love you
No No No Never
I’m never not gonna love you
Every time I see your sweet smile
This old love feels brand new
Every time I see your sweet smile
This old love feels brand new

Wyoming Girl

This song was on my second album “Secret Places”, but with Didier’s help on lap steel guitar, I had a chance to rework it a bit into more of the country song it always wanted to be.

The heat of the day still lingers
In these old red rocks under my hand
But the wind holds a chill that I can feel
Summer drops away like grains of sand

The prairie grass waves in the wind
It hides the secret places where we laid
The ice and snow are creeping back again
To steal the heat from the love we made

Wyoming Girl, It’s time to be going
Wyoming Girl, Summer’s fading away
Where that train is bound there ain’t no way of knowing
But summer’s gone and I can’t stay

The high country rose blooms a short while
And the air burns thin in your lungs
Summer’s warmth is just a sad reminder
Of the long dark winter to come

Wyoming Girl, It’s time to be going
Wyoming Girl, Summer’s fading away
Where that train is bound there ain’t no way of knowing
But summer’s gone and I can’t stay

Don’t cry now, it had to end this way
Turn your tears to the cold September wind
Shut your doors and lock all your windows
Wait for springtime to come again

Wyoming Girl, It’s time to be going
Wyoming Girl, Summer’s fading away
Where that train is bound there ain’t no way of knowing
But summer’s gone and I can’t stay
Summer’s gone and I can’t stay

Sweet Petunia

I’m gonna stay right here ‘til you tell me that it’s time to go
If something’s wrong with this love, I’m gonna be the last to know it
I figure things out kinda slow
So if you don’t want me no more
You got to find a way to show it

I’m in orbit around your eyes
Every day I’m back in love again. The attraction’s automatic
You got me hypnotised
and I can’t lie
I have to say it feels fantastic

Sweet Petunia
I like to buzz around you and
Your soft soft petals
And your sweet perfume, yeah
So I am driven to an obvious conclusion
I’m gonna stay right here by your side

This is something I just can’t explain
I’m attracted to you. It’s just like gravitation
Love is scrambling up my brain
But I’m not complaining
I kinda like the whole sensation

Sweet Petunia
I like to buzz around you and
Your soft soft petals
And your sweet perfume, yeah
So I am driven to an obvious conclusion
I’m gonna stay right here by your side

You and me, now don’t you see
Through all the years ahead we gotta stay together
Just put a little trust in me
And I promise every day’s gonna be
Just a little better

Sweet Petunia
I like to buzz around you and
Your soft soft petals
And your sweet perfume, yeah
So I am driven to an obvious conclusion
I’m gonna stay right here by your side
By your side
By your side
By your side

The Best That We Can Do

Maybe we were always going to end up here
Maybe there was nowhere else to go
Maybe in time all the reasons will be clear
Maybe someday we’ll really know

Remember how we talked back in the day
Heart to heart and soul to soul
How we lost each other who can say
Maybe time and tears just took their toll

We’ve grown so far apart together
And we’re both pretending it’s not true
So you lie to me and I lie to you
Maybe that’s the best that we can do

We live our lives now on separate paths
You’ve got yours and I’ve got mine
It’s like we’re strangers and it just makes me sad
Everything we had is lost to time

We’ve grown so far apart together
And we’re both pretending it’s not true
So you lie to me and I lie to you
Maybe that’s the best that we can do

I look out the window and I watch the rain
And I wonder where it all went wrong
It’s all in pieces and won’t go together again
Happy endings only work in old love songs

Maybe there’s no way we can talk this one out
Maybe we can never be friends
Maybe we both know but we can’t say out loud
Maybe this is where our story ends

We’ve grown so far apart together
And we’re both pretending it’s not true
So you lie to me and I lie to you
Maybe that’s the best that we can do
You lie to me and I lie to you
Maybe that’s the best that we can do

No One Remembers Your Name

I closed the door and I locked it
Threw away the key
Hit a long road and walked it
To remember how to see

I don’t go there anymore
Things are not like before
I have changed
There’s no there anymore
I don’t care anymore
Life is strange
And no one remembers your name

There was no way around it
Some things you just can’t repair
I left it just like I found it
Vanished into thin air

I don’t go there anymore
Things are not like before
I have changed
There’s no there anymore
I don’t care anymore
Life is strange
And no one remembers your name

It all seemed so important at the time
But it was just another meaningless mountain to climb
At the end of the journey, all the hilltop views look the same
You get drawn to the flame, it takes over your brain, you forget why you came
And no one remembers your name

I could say I regret it
But that might be a lie
The past can speak if you let it
You gotta learn to ask why

I don’t go there anymore
Things are not like before
I have changed
There’s no there anymore
I don’t care anymore
Life is strange
And no one remembers your name
No one remembers your name
No one remembers your name
No one remembers your name
No one remembers your name

Tell Me Sell Me

Tell me
Everything you say is true
Tell me
There’s nothing we can do
Tell me
You believe the things you say
Tell me
Why it has to be this way

Tell me, Tell me
What you tell yourself
Tell me, Tell me
What you tell yourself

Tell me
What’s that whispering in your ear
Tell me
There’s no way to there from here
Tell me
We’re not gambling with our lives
Tell me
There’s some way that we’ll survive

Tell me, Tell me
What you tell yourself
Tell me, Tell me
What you tell yourself

Tell me what you tell yourself when the lights go out and you’re on your own
Tell me how you sleep at night when lies don’t work and you’re alone

Sell me
Like you’ve sold them all before
Sell me
As if I don’t know the score
Sell me
Another bucket-full of lies
Sell me
And look me in the eye

Sell me, Sell me
What you tell yourself
Sell me, Sell me
What you tell yourself

Sell me what you sell yourself when the lights go out and you’re on your own
Sell me how you sleep at night when lies don’t work and you’re alone

Tell me, Tell me
Sell me, Sell me
Tell me, Tell me
Sell me, Sell me

Some Birds

Scarecrow in a field
Ragged in a winter storm
It’s a cold and bitter harvest
When you find you’re all alone

That bird has flown away
To someplace you can’t go
It’s singing different songs
To someone you don’t know

Some birds fly
Some birds sing
Some birds die with a broken wing
Up in the clouds
in places we can’t go
Some birds don’t cast a shadow

A bird may come
And sing for a while
A bird may go
And fly for many a mile
A bird can’t stay
Where there’s no safe nest
Where the winds blow cold
Where its heart can’t rest

Some birds fly
Some birds sing
Some birds die with a broken wing
Up in the clouds
in places we can’t go
Some birds don’t cast a shadow

Something beautiful touched down
Right in front of you
And you never really saw it
Until it vanished into the blue

You will never understand
No matter what you say
You held it trembling in your hands
Until the day it flew away
You never heard the song
Singing right there in your ear
You never learned to listen
And then it disappeared

Some birds fly
Some birds sing
Some birds die with a broken wing
Up in the clouds
in places we can’t go
Some birds don’t cast a shadow

The Reckoning

The summer’s gone
The harvest’s in
The wine is pressed
Let the counting begin
What was good
What was bad
Were we worth
All the blessings we had

It’s the time of the reckoning
It’s the time of the reckoning
It’s the time of the reckoning
It’s the time of the reckoning

Did we find
What was lost
Did we stand
When it was time to pay the cost
Were we blind
Did we see
Were we all
We hoped we might be

It’s the time of the reckoning
It’s the time of the reckoning
It’s the time of the reckoning
It’s the time of the reckoning

We thought we had all the time in the world
We turned around and now the world has no time
So many gifts, so undeserved
We lost our way and left the dream behind

Did we fall
Did we rise
In the end
Were we really alive
If we could
Start again
Would we still try to fight with the wind

Did we find
What was lost
Did we stand to pay the cost
Were we blind
Did we see
Were we all we might be
Did we fall
Did we rise
Were we really alive
Did we find
What was lost
Did we stand to pay the cost
Were we blind
Did we see
Were we all we might be
Did we fall
Did we rise
Were we really alive

On the Wind

For Larry Chandler, a man I was proud to call my friend.

Tell them first that I was grateful
For all the gifts along the way
If I could rise out of these sheets
That’s the first thing I would say

My life was filled with magic
I lived in wonder and delight
There were always new adventures
Waiting somewhere out of sight

On the wind is where I wrote my story
On the wind, alive to each new day
On a course to undiscovered territory
On the wind. Please remember me that way

Tell them all that I’m sorry
For the way it had to end
No time to say goodbye
To all the people I called friends

Life is beautiful and sad
A paradise that we don’t own
We dance together in the garden
But we come and go alone

On the wind is where I wrote my story
On the wind, alive to each new day
On a course to undiscovered territory
On the wind. Please remember me that way

If they ask, say love and kindness
Give everything, don’t be afraid
The gifts you share are never wasted
That’s how tomorrow’s gifts are made

I took the risk to show compassion
I lived with generosity
I got more back than I could ever give
And that made all the difference for me

On the wind is where I wrote my story
On the wind, alive to each new day
On a course to undiscovered territory
On the wind. Please remember me that way
At journey’s end there’s safe harbor in the bay
On the wind. Please remember me that way
